Embedded Strategic Capacity Partner
Senior strategy and implementation capacity for mission-driven organizations navigating a consequential period of growth, transition, redesign, or execution.
This engagement is designed for organizations that need more than a short project, but do not necessarily need—or are not yet ready to add—another full-time senior leader.
Best fit when
- A strategic plan exists, but leadership needs additional capacity to move it into implementation.
- A new initiative, portfolio, or partnership requires senior coordination across functions.
- The organization is growing or changing faster than its operating systems.
- An executive team needs structured follow-through between major decisions and day-to-day execution.
- A transition, pilot, or redesign needs temporary leadership capacity without creating a permanent role too early.
- Funders, boards, partners, and internal teams need a more coherent implementation and learning rhythm.
The role
The partner works alongside leadership to turn priorities into operating decisions, clarify ownership, coordinate workstreams, strengthen systems, and create the feedback loops needed to keep implementation moving.
The role is intentionally bounded: the goal is to strengthen organizational capacity and ownership—not create permanent dependence on an outside consultant.
Typical areas of support
- Strategy execution and priority management
- Operating-model and workflow improvement
- Program, portfolio, or product development
- Partnership and stakeholder coordination
- Revenue, sustainability, and business-model thinking
- Leadership decision support
- Measurement, learning, and adaptation
Working rhythm
- Defined outcomes and scope at the start of the engagement
- Recurring leadership working sessions
- Hands-on development of plans, tools, decisions, and implementation materials
- Coordination with internal staff and external partners as appropriate
- Regular progress and learning reviews
- Clear handoff and ownership plan before the engagement ends
Typical engagement
Usually structured as a time-bound engagement of approximately 3–6 months, with the level of involvement shaped around the organization’s priorities, internal capacity, and implementation needs.
Scope, cadence, deliverables, and decision authority are agreed before work begins so the role complements—not confuses—existing leadership responsibilities.
Not simply a retainer
This is not an open-ended block of consulting hours. The engagement is organized around a defined strategic period, measurable priorities, real implementation work, and a clear transition of ownership back to the organization.
